FLOSZ refers to a common spelling pattern in English: when a one-syllable word ends in a single short vowel followed by the sounds /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/, the final consonant is typically doubled (as in buzz, hill, pass, off). FLOSZ is often introduced early because it provides practice with short vowel sounds while introducing a new spelling convention.
Our three FLOSZ lessons introduce this concept through engaging, research-based instruction that integrates orthography, morphology, and meaningful word work – laying the foundation for confident, capable spellers.
