<c> as /s/ Spelling Pattern - Soft <c>
Often referred to as soft <c>, <c> is typically pronounced /s/ when followed by <e>, <i>, or <y>. The English language experienced an influx of French and Latin words during the 1066 Norman invasion. An increased use of <k> emerged to distinguish between the sounds /k/ and /s/, as <c> began to represent the sound /s/ with this French influence. Students will investigate words that begin with <kn>. They will learn that words with <kn> often have a sense of “sticking out” or “poking”.
